March 20 - 26, 2000: "Prime Time", from The Tubes' very cool 1979 TV-themed album, "Remote Control". |
February 28 - March 5, 2000: "Life'll Kill Ya", a happy little ditty from Warren Zevon's new CD of the same name. |
February 14 - 20, 2000: "Riding on the Back", performed by Francis Dunnery, from his album "Lets Go Do What Happens". Francis is incredibly entertaining to see live. |
February 7 - 13, 2000: "Writing on the Wall", performed by Lene Lovich. This is a very cool early 'new wave' track, from her 1979 debut album "Stateless". |
January 31 - February 6, 2000: "Bleecker & MacDougal", performed by Fred Neil, from the album of the same name (the copy we have is some weird version from Japan). The album cover photo (an incredible shot of Fred on a NYC street at night) is worth the price alone! Fred is best known for writing the song "Everybody's Talking" from the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack. He's a great singer/songwriter who influenced tons of people, including Tim Buckley. |
January 10 - 16, 2000: "Sitting Targets (live)", performed by Peter Hammill. This is from Peter's 1985 live album, "The Margin", which I have yet to obtain! The sound clip is from a cassette made for me by a friend ages ago (which explains the somewhat lousy quality). It's one of the most powerful pieces of music I've heard amazing!. |
January 3 - 9, 2000: "English Rose", performed by Kevin Coyne. This song is from his 1997 double-CD set, "Knocking on your Brain", and features co-writer & guitarist extraordinaire Gary Lucas. |
December 27, 1999 - January 2, 2000: "21st. Century Schizoid Man", performed by King Crimson. Ok, I just had to put up some sort of millennium song -- and I admit (she says sheepishly) that I got the idea to use this song from Tower Pulse! magazine. It is a great song though, with my favorite KC 'frontman', Greg Lake. |
December 20 - 26, 1999: "Christmas With the Devil", performed by Spinal Tap! In honor of the Christmas holiday, I had to find this gem. This is definitely my favorite Christmas song of all time. I first heard it many years ago, while stressed out from the holidays, and it lifted my spirits big-time! |
December 13 - 19, 1999: "The Last Ride", performed by the one and only Todd Rundgren. Boy, I'm in a pop mood lately! But I think Todd goes deeper than that, at least when he's not playing "Bang The Drum All Day". A legend for his production credits alone, I've come to be a huge Todd fan over the last few years. |
December 6 - 12, 1999: "Date Stamp", performed by ABC, from one of the best pop albums ever, "The Lexicon of Love", which was released in 1982. |
November 29 - December 5, 1999: "Elevation", performed by Television, one of the best New York bands in my opinion. Yet another critically acclaimed band that influenced hundreds, but unfortunately never broke through themselves. This clip is from their classic 1977 album "Marquee Moon". |
November 22 - 28, 1999: "Computerlove", a wonderful cover of the Kraftwerk classic, performed by The Balanescu Quartet. To me, this track proves that Kraftwerk's compositions went way beyond mere "techno-pop". I was fortunate enough to see The Balanescu Quartet a few years ago here in NYC. You can find this and four other Kraftwerk covers, plus a few other great pieces, on their 1992 Mute release "Possessed". |
November 14 - 21, 1999: "Jet Boy" performed by the New York Dolls. This is from their self-titled 1973 debut, produced by Todd Rundgren. Real Rock & Roll! Believe it or not, one of their big fans is Morrissey, who even wrote a book about the Dolls. |
July 7 - 13, 1997: "The Queen of Argyll" performed by Silly Wizard, an amazing traditional Scottish band. Sadly, they are no longer together, but you can find many of their albums reissued on the Shanachie label. |
June 2 - 15, 1997: "The Way Young Lovers Do" performed by Jeff Buckley, whose short life ended on May 29th. |
May 26 - June 1, 1997: "Super Sex" performed by Morphine, perhaps the strangest 3-piece in the world! "Super Sex" is from Morphine's 1995 Rykodisc release Yes. |
April 21 - 25, 1997: "Sweet Surrender" performed by Tim Buckley. This is from a live performance on November 27, 1973, for New York radio station WLIR. The entire show can be found on the "Honeyman" CD, released in 1995 by Manifesto Records. It is highly recommended! |
April 14 - 20, 1997: "4 Camels" performed by the Joan Osborne Band, from the 1991 Womanly Hips Music release "Soul Show," recorded live at Delta 88 in NYC, May 22, 1991. This song is also available on on Joan's "Early Recordings" album on Blue Gorilla/Mercury. |
April 7 - 13, 1997: "Green Haze" performed by Elvis Hitler. Sadly, I have no idea where one can get this fine record -- I taped it off of a friend's radio show. |
March 24 - 30, 1997: A belated St. Patrick's Day clip, "An Gabhar Bán" by my favorite Irish band Clannad, from their album Clannad 2 (Originally released in 1974, but my copy is a 1988 Shanchie reissue on CD). |
| March 3-9, 1997: "I Never Asked to be Your Mountain" performed by Gary Lucas (guitar), Jeff Buckley (vocals) and others... From the Tim Buckley Tribute at St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn, New York 4/26/91 |
